CIGA design's Time Cipher: A Watch with Wandering Hours on an Ultra-Dark Dial

Chinese watch brands still spark debate among enthusiasts, and it's easy to understand why. While some offer genuinely original projects, others rely on inexpensive homage pieces that mimic familiar shapes and famous references, often with inconsistent finishing and a disposable, fast-fashion approach. This legacy often influences initial perceptions before a watch is even laid out on the table. However, the landscape has been shifting, and several brands have been pushing beyond the 'cheap copy' stereotype by investing in industrial design, better manufacturing, and a unique identity. CIGA design is one of the names frequently mentioned when discussing China's ability to create watches that are taken seriously.
The brand's Blue Planet, which won the Challenge Watch Prize at the GPHG in 2021, was a game-changer. Awards don't guarantee greatness, but they draw attention, and the Blue Planet was hard to ignore: unconventional, visually bold, and determined to display time in its own way, it was a well-deserved winner. This highlighted a challenge for many collectors: reconciling the idea that a Chinese brand can deliver a concept watch with genuine design intent, rather than just offering a 'value' alternative to Swiss watches.
The new Time Cipher, positioned as CIGA design's next venture, aims to prove that the Blue Planet wasn't a one-off. It's a wandering-hour watch with an affordability argument, challenging the notion of time as something read from familiar hands. This display encourages a different engagement, prompting the discussion about the movement rather than the dial.
The Time Cipher's mechanism is a sequential way of reading time. Minutes are continuous and legible, following a pointer around the dial, while hours are caught as they align with fixed markers. This design choice adds a layer of theatre to the wandering-hour indications, with rotating displays and a focus on choreography. However, it also tends towards bulk and complexity, which CIGA addresses by stripping the concept back, aiming for mechanical interest.
The movement, labeled CD-08, is a customized automatic calibre based on the Miyota 9000 series. It boasts 28,800 vibrations per hour, a 42-hour power reserve, and an accuracy of around -10 to +20 seconds per day. Extensive testing has ensured stability and a deliberate rhythm for the wandering-hour mechanism.
The dial is a key element of the watch's identity, featuring a 'Super Black' coating that absorbs 99.3% of light, making the moving elements appear to float. The minute track is marked with raised indices, finely CNC-engraved and finished in high gloss, creating a contrast between the light-swallowing base and glinting reference points. This design decision enhances readability and visual coherence.
Attention is also drawn to the finishing on the wandering assembly, with partial skeletonization, côtes de Genève, and chamfered detailing on the minute-side element. The hour disc is openworked, combining polished accents and satin-brushed surfaces, and the numerals are filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova. A micro-sandblasted counterweight keeps the assembly balanced as it travels.
The case, made from 316L stainless steel, measures 45mm in diameter and 11.8mm in thickness, housing the wandering-hour module. It features shallow capsule-like recesses at the cardinal points to create depth and contrast in textures, with micro-sandblasted sections against mirror-polished areas. The watch uses a domed sapphire crystal and comes in 'carbon' and 'silver' color options.
The Time Cipher is finished with a black fluororubber strap and a hidden deployant clasp, offering comfort and a sporty aesthetic that complements the avant-garde design. CIGA design's historical reference to 17th-century 'night clocks' and the evolution of the wandering-hour idea through pocket watches and modern independents adds a layer of plausibility to the complication as an everyday purchase.
While the Time Cipher won't convert everyone due to its size, aesthetic, and the concept of 'decoding' time, it represents a significant step in the argument that the best Chinese brands are no longer chasing legitimacy through imitation but through identity. The watch is available for pre-order on the brand's website for US$899.
