In a significant move that has the potential to reshape their defensive strategy, the Washington Commanders have decided to bring on Daronte Jones as their new defensive coordinator. This news comes from Adam Schefter of ESPN, who reported that Jones, previously serving as the defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, will now take on this crucial role in Washington.
Interestingly, before the Commanders made their decision, Brian Flores, who was the defensive coordinator for the Vikings, also interviewed for the same position in Washington. However, he ultimately chose to remain with the Vikings by signing a new contract.
Daronte Jones joined the Vikings in 2022, initially taking on the responsibilities of coaching the defensive backs. His role expanded the following year when he became the passing game coordinator, demonstrating his adaptability and expertise in defensive strategies. Over the years, he has gained valuable experience coaching under notable figures such as Vance Joseph, Mike Zimmer, and Brian Flores, which has undoubtedly enriched his coaching philosophy.
Before his time with the Vikings, Jones had stints with the Miami Dolphins from 2016 to 2017 and with the Cincinnati Bengals between 2018 and 2019. Additionally, in 2021, he held the position of defensive coordinator at LSU, showcasing his capability to lead and develop defensive units at various levels of competition.
This hiring comes on the heels of the Commanders’ decision to part ways with their former defensive coordinator, Joe Whitt, on January 6. Notably, head coach Dan Quinn had already taken over the play-calling responsibilities after Week 10 of the previous season. Unfortunately, the team's performance was not up to par, finishing at the bottom of the league in terms of yards allowed and ranking 27th in points given up.
